Semantic Relations in Standardization of Croatian Terminology

The basic semantic relations which are important for the standardization of (Croatian) terminology will be analyzed. For each relation a number of examples from the fields of medicine, dental medicine, information science, communication science, economy, etc. will be given. The analyzed relations are: logical hierarchical relations, partitive relations, synonymy, polisemy, antonymy, paronymy.
All co-hyponyms should be standardized in the same way. The detection of antonyms is also very important for structuring and standardizing a terminological system. The equivalent terms should be determined, grouped together and preferably only one of them selected as the preferred term. Other synonymous terms should be classified in one of these categories: jargon terms or obsolete (archaic) terms, admitted terms and deprecated terms. In giving preference to one synonymous term terminological principles give reliable help. In the presentation the focus will be on two linguistically based principles: preference for native language (pozivni centar and not call centar), and linguistic correctness on all language levels. Special attention will be paid to the orthographic level (internet and not Internet, ekodizajn not eko-dizajn, pretkutnjak not predkutnjak, bezračni not bezzračni, adhezija not athezija, manifestni not manifesni), the level of word-formation (protezni not protetski, promocijski not promotivni, antikorupcijski not antikoruptivni, internetsko novinarstvo not internet-novinarstvo), and syntactic level (aramidno vlakno not vlakno od aramida, prodajni kanal not kanal prodaje).
In the end of the seminar all the above will be illustrated on some examples from selected semantic fields (terminological case study).
